A common sequence format offered by most sequence and alignment editors.
A 'greater than' symbol followed by the sequence name, anything after the first hite space on the header line defines the description field. The following lines after a header line correspond to the sequence. Empty lines are not considered. Masked/unknown positions in the sequence are shown as 'N' or 'X', for nucleotide and protein sequences respectively.
